Development of a Program to Enhance Competency for Caring Hematological Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy of Professional Nurses Who Have Worked for Less than 5 Years and Never Received Training in Nursing for Patients Receiving Cancer Chemotherapy,
Abstract
This research was to study the development of a program to increase the competency of registered nurses for caring hematological cancer patients receiving chemotherapy Khon Kaen Hospital, Khon Kaen Province. The participants purposively selected were 7 nurses who have worked in the blood medicine ward for less than 5 years and 3 nanny nurses. The research tools consisted of competency enhancement program for professional nurses with the content validity index (CVI) of 0.93. The tools for data collection were the professional nurse competency assessment form with the CVI of 0.97 and the reliability of 0.91 and the observational form of practical skills for caring hematological cancer patients receiving chemotherapy with the CVI of 1.00. The basic information was analyzed by the descriptive statistics. The Performance comparision before and after participating in the program was analyzed by the Wilcoxon signed rank test statistics. The qualitative data was analyzed by content analysis.
The results showed that the increased competency program of professional nurses in caring for hematological cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in Khon Kaen Hospital consisted of 4 processes: 1) Planning and analyzing the situation by group discussions and in–depth interviews, it was found that the nurses did not have specific training in chemotherapy administration, had no clear supervision pattern and were taught only during the operational period. Then brainstorm was carried out to design the program which consists of 6 days–theoretical training and 5 days–demonstration and practical training 2) Action: Implement the program. 3) Observation, it was found that the professional nurses’ competency after joining the program was significantly higher than before joining the program (p = 0.018). The mean practice score was high (2.74, S.D. = 0.26) and 4) Reflection and result discussion to develop the increased competency program implemented at the blood medicine ward at Khon Kaen hospital, Khon Kaen Province.
