Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the complications, severity, and treatment outcomes before and after applying a guideline for patient care of dengue hemorrhagic fever in children. Sixty samples were purposively selected from groups of children aged from 1 to 15 years, who were diagnosed with dengue fever or dengue hemorrhagic fever, and were admitted at the pediatric ward between February and July 2019. The research instruments included: 1) a medical record audit form, 2) the guideline for patient care of dengue hemorrhagic fever in children, and 3) a treatment outcome record form. The data were analysed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Chi-square test.

The results of the study were as follows:

               1. After using the patient care guideline, the complications were lower than before. Among these complications, hypervolemia and pneumonia were significantly different (p < 0.05).

              2. After using the patient care guideline, the severity of the disease, including shock and severe shock was lower than before and significantly different (p < 0.05).

              3. After using the patient care guideline, the improved treatment outcomes was higher than before but not significantly different.
