Nocturia in the older adults
Abstract
The prevalence of nocturia has increased in older adults. The definition of nocturia is as one or more times of sleep interruption at night owing to voiding. The nocturia contributes to increased risk of falls and fractures because of daytime somnolence, cognitive impairment, reduced quality of life. The pathophysiology of nocturia in older adults involves age-related several factors including reduced bladder capacity, nocturnal polyuria, global polyuria and sleep disorder. Bladder diary, taking history and physical examination play major roles in nocturia assessment. In terms of treatment nocturia in geriatric population, non-pharmacological management including behavior and lifestyle modification should be started before the initiation of medications based on pathophysiology such as antimuscarinics, α1-adrenoceptor blockers, vasopressin agonists
