Five-year experience with Norplant In Roi-ed Hospital

Abstract

Norplant contraceptive implants are silastic - Silicone implants containing levonorgestrel. When placed subcutaneously in the arm, they release a low level of hormone in a constant manner over 5 years. This clinical study was undertaken at Roi-et Hospital. During the five years in which 77 cases were studied, the results show a pregnancy rate of removal (31.2%). The continuation rate at ½ , 1 , 2 , 3, 4 , and 5 years was 93.2, 89.0, 79.2, 76.4, 77.4, and 40.0 % respectively. Menstrual disturbances was the principal side effect and the major reason (70.8% of the time) for the removal of the implant.
