Outcomes of Clinical Nursing Practice Guideline for Prevention and Relief of Oral Mucositis in Cancer Patients Receiving 5-Fluorouracil

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate outcomes of clinical nursing practice guideline (CNPG) for prevention and relief of oral mucositis in cancer patients receiving 5-fluorouracil. It was conducted at the 4th floor cancer ward, Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital during February –April 2013. The samples consisted of 71 women with colorectal cancer and 8 nurses. The CNPG for prevention and relief of oral mucositis in cancer patients who receiving 5-fluorouracil, leaflet about prevention and relief of oral mucositis, WHO oral mucositis scale, Nurse cooperate with CNPG questionnaire, nurse satisfaction on CNPG for prevention and relief of oral mucositis questionnaire were research instruments. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic. The results shown that CNPG for prevention and relief of oral mucositis implementation has positive clinical outcome. It could prevente oral mucositis at severe grade (3 and 4). The percentage of ability to implement CNPG was 97.0.The suggestion of these study were (1) The CNPG for prevention and relief of oral mucositis should be implement in real clinical context and extended to other cancer clinical setting, and (2) nurses should initiate nursing innovation for prevention and relief of oral mucositis.
