Abstract

Objective : To study  occupational  related  accidents  of  ophthalmology  field

Method : A retrospective  study  of  patients  at  Pichit  hospital  who  presented  with  eye  injuries  related  to  their  works  between  1  October  2002  to  30  September  2003.

Result : There  were  182  patients, aged  range  from  18-64 years  old.  The  male  and  female  ratio  was 3 :1.  The  age  group  of   21 - 30  years  old  comprised  the  majority  of  the  patients. The most common occupational eye injury was found in agriculture (59%). The most  common  injury  was  corneal  foreign  body (43 %). Penetrating  or  perforating  injury  resulted  in  severe  visual  impairment.  The  mechanism  of  penetrating  or  perforating  injury  was  related  to  metallic  tools objects.  Eighty-six  percents  of  patients  did  not  wear  eye  protectors ; many  were  attributable  to  ignorance.

Conclusion : The  most  common occupational  eye  injury  was  found  in  agriculture. The  most  common  injury  was  corneal  foreign  body.  Penetrating  or  perforating  injury  resulted  in  severe  visual  impairment.  Most  patients  did  not  wear  eye  protectors.
