Nurse Staffing Among Inpatient Departments, Phichit Hospital
Abstract
Nurse staffing analysis is responsible of nursing administration for appropriate Staffing management in nursing unit for quality of nursing service.
This research was descriptive study. The purposes to study nursing work load in nursing activities and nursing staffing need of Inpatient department. The subjects were 256; include professional nurse, technical nurse and nurse aids who were responsible in giving direct nursing care, indirect nursing care and unit – related activities at department in 19 unit, during 8 September –7 December 2004.
The instruments were the nursing activities dictionary, patient Classification tool, time record direct nursing care, indirect nursing care and unit – related activities and digital time clock. The instuments content validity index of patient – classification tool was 1.0 ; nursing activities dictionary was 0.98 and were tested for interrater agreement of patient classification, nursing activities dictionary and time record nursing was 0.8 . Data was analysis by statistic descriptive. The results of the research were as follows:
1. The time spent in direct nursing care; it was found that the highest mean score of time spent in intensive care patient (categories 1) making 13.45 hours. The second was in Extensive care patient (categories 2 ) making 6.24 hours and moderate care patient (categories 3), minimal care patient (categories 4) making 2.33, 1.33 hours respectively.The highest mean score of time spent in nursing activities of intensive care patient, Extensive care was suction and vital signs making 361.47,178.09 minutes. but moderate care patient was teach and mental support making 57.59 minutes.
2. The mean time indirect nursing care activities making 54.59 minutes by nursing record , clean unit and pre-post conference making 8..23, 8.21 and 7.31 minutes.
3. The mean time use unit – related activities making 97.08 minutes by open inventories, assignment making 18.56 and 13.13 minutes
4. The results of nursing staffing show that over productivity was 9 ward, lower productivity 9 ward and appropriate 2 ward.
The results of the research can be used for appropriate staffing management in nursing unit for quality of nursing service.
