Accessibility to Contraceptive Implant among post-partum teenage mothers, Samutprakan Province: A mixed method study

This research used mixed-method to study the problem situations and success factors to access contraceptives implant in postpartum teenage mothers, Samutprakan Province. Quantitative sample included 181 postpartum teenage mothers who gave birth and came to check up at 6 government hospitals from October to December 2020. Qualitatively, 81 key informants were selected according to their roles and duties, 1) 13 executives 2) 30 Head of related departments in the hospitals 3) 30 service support staff 4) 8 contraceptives implant providers (7 registered nurses who have been trained to provide contraceptive implant and 1 obstetrician).The research tool consisted of questionnaires, in-depth interview, group conversation taken from July 2020 to April 2021. Descriptive statistic, frequency distribution, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used for quantitative data analysis while content-oriented data was used for qualitative analysis. In 5 aspects of study, the results showed that, the hospitals set these services and policy 1) Provide services to teenage mothers after giving birth immediately before returning home. 2) The adequacy of supporting medical supplies 3) Knowledge, competence, and skill of a professional nurse and obstetrician who provide services 4) Free of charge services 5) Acceptance and confidence for service quality are built for teenage mothers throughout pregnancy. From this research, it is suggested that hospitals should monitor and assess teenage mothers about their cognitive abilities, acceptance, ease of access to contraceptive implants service during their prenatal period in order to develop operations that meet with the goal, area context, policy. In addition, to increase channels for communication about semi-permanent contraceptives including benefits packages to reach adolescents/adolescent mothers and their families
