Nursing Care of Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury and Acute subdural hemorrhage with Maxilo-facial bone fractures: Two Case Studies

Abstract

             Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the nursing care of traumatic brain injured patients with acute subdural hemorrhage and maxilo-facial bone fracture : Two case studies.

            Methodology : This comparative study investigated into two patients who diagnosed as traumatic brain injury with acute subdural hemorrhage and maxilo-facial bone fracture admitted to Mahasarakham hospital. The data was collected from medical records and a nursing problem and needs assessment form based on Gordon's 11 functional health patterns. Data analysis involved a comparative examination of general information, health patterns, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, treatment plans, and nursing problems and diagnoses during the critical phase, continuous care phase, and discharge planning phase.

            Results : Both of two case studies diagnosed traumatic brain injury and subdural hemorrhage, revealing nine common problematic functional health patterns. Key nursing problems during the critical phase included monitoring for increased intracranial pressure, risk of electrolyte imbalance, and anxiety in both patients and their relatives. Additionally, case study no.1 experienced respiratory failure, while case study no.2 presented with hypovolemic shock and  urinary tract infection. Both patients were received the standard nursing care and discharged home according to their treatment plans as well.

            Conclusion : For patients are diagnosed with traumatic brain injury with acute subdural hemorrhage and maxilo-facial bone fracture, nurses need to apply their knowledge and skills to assess the complications and monitor abnormal symptoms, for ensuring prompt and timely to assist the patients.
