Anesthesia related adverse events can be occured preoperative, intraoperative or postoperative. Anesthesia related adverse events can be avoidable and unavoidable. Proper prevention and early treatment will reduce severity of anesthesia related adverse events.

Objective: To study the incidence of anesthesia related adverse events in patient undergoing surgery under anesthesia at Jainad Narendra Hospital as well as to define the prevention method to avoid occurrence of anesthesia related adverse events or reduce severity of unavoidable anesthesia related adverse events or to prevent the repetition of the anesthesia related adverse events.

Method: The study design was retrospective descriptive study. All patients undergoing surgery under anesthesia at Jainad Narendra Hospital between 1 October 2019 and 31 March 2020 were included. Patient’s characteristics, type and department of surgery, anesthetic technique and the incidence of anesthesia related adverse events were reviewed. Result are presented in percentage forms.

Results: 2,217 Patients were included in this study. Patients with ASA 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 were 16.01%, 46.14%, 32.61%, 4.65% and 0.59% respectively. Most of the patients were elective surgery and were from general surgery department. Cancellation or postponement of surgery were 2.44%. Common incidence of adverse events of General Anesthesia and Total Intravenous Anesthesia were hypotension 12.31%, difficult mask ventilation3.09% and hypertension 1.74%. Common incidence of adverse events of Spinal Anesthesia were hypotension 7.86%, urinary retention 2.45% and fail spinal anesthesia 1.96%. Other incidence of anesthesia related adverse events were severe postoperative pain 5.92%, PONV 2.82% and shivering 2.64%.

Conclusion: The most common adverse event of General Anesthesia, Total Intravenous Anesthesia and Spinal Anesthesia were hypotension.
