Effects of the Emergency Medical Protocol under Medical Direction on Knowledge and Practice Skills of trainees in Emergency Medical Technician Training Course
Abstract
Abstract
This research was aimed to determine the effects of the Emergency Medical Protocol under Medical Direction (EMP-MD) on knowledge and practice skills of trainees in the emergency medical technician (EMT) training course. The sample was 80 trainees who took EMT course at Chaophraya abhaibhubejhr hospital. The sample was divided into two groups. The experimental group participated in the EMP-MD, while the control group received the conventional instructional curriculum based on the Emergency National Institute of Thailand. Course duration in each group was 115 hours. Research instruments consisted of knowledge and practice skills tests. Data was analyzed by mean, standard deviation, and independent t-test.
Research results revealed that the trainees participated the EMP-MD had scores of knowledge and non-trauma practice skills significantly higher than the trainees received the conventional instructional curriculum at the level of 0.05 (p = 0.153), whereas trauma practice skill score was not significantly difference between experimental and control groups. The results indicate that the developed EMP-MD could enhance knowledge and non-trauma practice skills of the trainees in the EMT training course. However, instruction for trauma practice skill should be further developed.
