Abstract

Abstract

This Research aims to study factors affecting burdens of caregivers of schizophrenic patients receiving treatment in Kosum Phisai Hospital.
This Research is a cross-sectional descriptive study by using questionnaires to collect the general information of patients and caregivers together with Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale, the Form of Measuring of Knowledge on Caregiving of Schizophrenic Patients, Questionnaires of Caregivers’ Attitudes on Schizophrenic Patients, Form of Measuring of Social Support, and History from Medical Records, totaling 94 people, in the research period of
24 weeks.  The Researcher has analyzed the data with descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression analysis.

According to the study result, it was found that the sample groups had burdens of caregiving of schizophrenic patients at a low level ( ????̅ = 53.7).  Attitudes on caregiving of schizophrenic patients and social support correlated with the caregiving of schizophrenic patients with statistical significance (r = -0.30,
r = -0.32, p<0.001 respectively).  Both variables were able to jointly predict factors affecting the caregiving at 20% (R2adj = 0.201, p<.00014).  Variables which were able to best predict burdens of caregiving were attitudes on caregiving of schizophrenic patients (b = -0.3060, p< .003), followed by social support
(b = -0.2857, p< .004).

In summary, factors affecting burdens of caregivers of schizophrenic patients included attitudes on the caregiving of schizophrenic patients and social support.

The Researcher recommended that health personnel should prioritize and emphasize the promotion of attitudes on the caregiving of schizophrenic patients, including the increasing promotion of social support, which would help reduce burdens of caregiving of schizophrenic patients.
