Abstract
Thisiquasi–experimentaliresearchiaimeditoiexamineitheieffect of a preoperative preparatory program on anxiety and complications in cataract patients. The participants consisted of 60 patients with cataract who had undergone Ophthalmology Outpatient Department at Bueng Kan Hospital. The participants were equally assigned into a control group (n=30) and an experimental group (n=30). The two groups were paired match by gender and age. They were then grouped by using simple random sampling. The control group received a conventional care, while the experimental group underwent the preoperative preparatory program developed from Roy's adaptation model and Leventhal and Johnson' s theory of self-regulation. The program took form 30 to 45 minutes.
The research instruments consisted of 1) the developed preoperative preparatory program 2) a personal data form 3) the State Anxiety Inventory: Form X-I, and 4) a complication form. The data were analysed by using percentage, mean, standard deviation (SD) and variances between groups were compared by paired t-test and independent t-test.
The level of statistical significance was set at 0.05.
The finding showed that the mean score of the anxiety of the patients who underwent the developed preoperative preparatory program was significantly lower than that of the patients who received the conventional care (p<0.001). In contrast, there was no statistical difference of the mean scores of the complications of the cataract surgery between the two groups.
According to the findings, the developed preoperative preparatory program was effective in reducing anxiety among cataract patients who underwent surgery. This study recommends that there should be a preoperative preparatory program which covers all processes of the procedures that patients will involve. In particular, the medical procedures should be demonstrated and trained to ensure that the patients can practice correctly. Moreover, there should be further studies for other preoperative preparatory to assure the standardised standard of care.
