The Effects of Psychoeducation and Continuing Care Program on Self-care of a Person with First Episode Schizophrenia
Abstract
The purpose of research was to examine the effects of psychoeducation and continuing care program on self-care of a person with first episode schizophrenia. The sample was the first episode schizophrenia patients who received outpatient treatment in outpatient department of university hospital, Bangkok. The sample of 40 was match paired into experimental and control groups, each containing 20 members. The research instruments comprised psychoeducation program, the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS, a questionnaire of demographic data, the self-care behaviors scale. Statistics used for data analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, paired t-test, and independent t-test. The results showed that: after participating in the psychoeducation and continuing care program, the experimental group had score of self-care ability statistically significantly higher than pre-test and the control group (p< 0.05). This research suggests that psychoeducation program and continues care developed from this research could increase the self-care capability of the first episode schizophrenia patients. It can be used as a guideline for the development of a nursing model by promoting self-care abilities of first-time schizophrenic patients. Therefore, the patient maintains the ability to take care of himself reduce the burden on the family or carer.
