Abstract

The objectives of this project was to develop a computerized physician order entry system to calculated total parenteral nutrition in pediatric patients (CPOE PEDIATRIC TPN) and to study the effectiveness of the nutrient calculation program. The study was conducted on a sample of 2,165 pediatric inpatient prescriptions given from March, 2017 to February, 2018 at Queen Savang Vadhana Memorial Hospital. This study was divided into three steps. The first was before develop CPOE to calculate TPN according to medical record form by calculator and excel program. The second step developed the program phase 1 by Microsoft excel. Then the third step develop program phase 2 by CPOE. The statistics used for data analysis were frequency, percentage.

The results showed the medication error of category E was not found in phase 1 by Microsoft excel and phase 2 by CPOE. The others errors occurred in the category A-I was 3.7% (27 medication errors in 7,271 orders) in before phase 1, 1.9% (11 medication errors in 5,764 orders) in phase 1 by Microsoft excel, 0.7% (6 medication errors in 8,761 orders) in phase 2 by CPOE. After finishing program development, 50 healthcare providers were invited to use this program and later, answer satisfaction questionnaires. Almost of them were satisfied.

Conclusion, This project is successful in development of computer software to support pharmaceutical care in calculating TPN in pediatric patients easily, conveniently and correctively.
