The objective of this study was to evaluate of National Access to Antiretroviral Program for People Living with HIV/AIDS (NAPHA) in Kanchanaburi province. The study was based on analysis of the reports of the patients who enrolled on NAPHA of Kanchanaburi and the reports of AIDS situation of the Paholpolpayuhasena hospital during 1 October 2003 - 30 June 2006. Descriptive statistical tests were employed.
There were 1,194 HIV/AIDS patients enrolled on the project and 91.5 percent of them had been regularly followed up. In addition, medical records of 210 patients of Paholpolpayuhasena hospital were reviewed and indicated definite increases of body weights while 99.5 percent showed increases of CD4 levels.
NAPHA Project probably also showed an impact on the situation of HIV/AIDS in Kanchanaburi because the number of new HIV/AIDS patients of Paholpolpayuhasena fell from 304 in fiscal year 2003 to 144 in 2005 and the opportunistic infections in HIV-infected cases went down from 287 to 142 during the same period.
As an important tool to control HIV/AIDS, NAPHA Project can be effective and promotes patients quality of life. More governmental support is needed in order to expand the service to more HIV/AIDS patients.
