Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop a safety promotion model on road traffic injuries and drowning using community participation. It was conducted from October 2014 to December 2015 in 13 villages of Khom-Kam Sub-district, Yang Chum Noi District, Srisaket Province. Participants were 129 village leaders, youth leaders, and local villagers purposively selected. The study was divided into 3 phases: (1) the situational analysis on road traffic injuries and drowning, (2) development and implementation of a safety promotion model, and (3) outcome evaluation. The statistical analysis was conducted be using percentages, median, means and paired t-test. As for the results, the model was comprised of 4 elements: (1) participation of the government, private and local community sectors, (2) risk assessment, (3) risk communication, and (4) risk managements covering the determinants of host, agent and environment as well as physical and social elements. The average post-test scores related to knowledge, perception and behavior of the participants were significantly higher than the pre-test score. The post-test score related to the extra safety promotion activities was also higher (p<0.05). As well, it was found that the mean number of injuries and drowning were lower after the development of the safety model (2015) compared to the situation during the previous 5 years (2010-2014). Thus, continued implementation of the model was recommended in order to prevent traffic injuries and drowning in the study areas.
