Effectiveness of the Use of Plastic Bag for Urine Collection - ประสิทธิผลของการใช้ถุงเก็บปัสสาวะที๋ทำจากถุงพลาสติก

Abstract

             Collection of urine specimens from child patients is quite difficult becuase of the lack of cooperation from them. Such difficulty may lead to undesirable consequences such as the delay in diagnosis and treatment. The objective of this study was to develop urine collection bag from regular plastic bag available from the market; and to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of the innovation with regards to the cost, urine collection time, maintenance and user satisfaction. It was conducted during the period from January to March 2016. Study participants were 30 pediatric patients aged 0 - 3 years old. The study tools were (1) the urine collection plastic bag, identified as Look Ruk bag; and (2) the satisfaction survey form. It was found that the cost of Look ruk bag was only baht 1, compared to 10 baht for a piece of commercial urine bag. The uring collection time was much faster, only one-third of the collection time by commercial urine bag. The plastic bag was found to be effective for urine collection as it was easy to use, just removing the adhesive sheath and attach the bag to the genital; and there was no leakage of urine. In addition, the bag was so slim that the patients felt comfortable to use. The attached scale to the bag was helpful for the measurement of urine volume. Assessment among users, the health personnel and the parents of patients, reveal satisfactory outcomes. All respondents express their satisfaction on the use of the nag, and there was no complecation observed during the study. In conclusion, the Look Ruk bag was found to be an effective urine collection device which should be further promoted for wider use.
