Trends of Perinatal Deaths at Pathum Thani Hospital 1997-2007

The objective of this retrospective study was to study the trends in perinatal mortality rate and causes of perinatal deaths at Pathum Thani hospital from October 1, 1996 to September 30, 2007. Medical records and reports during then were reviewed. There were 31,872 births with a total of 351 perinatal deaths. The perinatal mortality rates per annum were 7.49-16.34 per 1,000 births and its average was 11.01 per 1,000 births. Stillbirth and early neonatal death rate were 6.49 and 4.52 per 1,000 births, respectively. The most common cause of death was macerated fetus (30.7%) Causes of death from congenital anomalies, immaturity, asphyxia and specific conditions were 22.2, 7.69, 22.51 and 16.81 percent respectively. The perinatal mortality rate at PathumThani hospital declined from 13.27 in 1995 to 9.09 per 1,000 births in 2007. The trend of asphyxia, preventable cause decreased. Better understanding of the etiology of stillbirth is required for reducing perinatal deaths.
