Abstract

Cervicitis cases detected during Pap smear screening should be repeated Pap smears within 6 - 12 months after treatment to find out the hidden lesion. A review of those in Sanpatong District during 2005-2007 showed only 37.07% of them did; and 3.08% were found to be carcinoma of cervix. The objective of this study was to develop a working model to follow-up cervicitis cases diagnosed during Pap smear screening, and to compare the rate and the outcomes of repeated Pap smear. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. It was found that there were 2,204 women receiving Pap smear screening at Sanpatong Hospital and 18 Health Promotion Hospitals of Sanpatong District during 2008- 2013 who were reported to have cervisitis at the time of screening. After the implementation of the new working model, the rate of repeated Pap smear was increased from 48.5% in 2007 to be 92.5% in 2013. There were 34 cases found to have carcinoma of cervix (1.87%) of whom 0.66% were LSIL, 0.66% were HSIL, and 0.55% were advanced carcinoma. The developed working model used a complete cycle of management principles. It composed of (1) setting plans, objectives, and work instructions, (2) estimate and setting essential resources, (3) deploying the plans by responsibility areas, and (4) networking for M&E and Holistic integration. Repeating Pap smear after cervicitis treatment is a recommended policy.
