Abstract

This Evaluation Research aimed to evaluate a prototype of a multispecialty medical services center in the tertiary care level, Department of Medical Services through participatory design processes. The study had been conducted after 3 years of building usage with research tools; construction drawings and occupants’ satisfaction assessment questionnaires which had the IOC (Index of item objective congruence) of 0.81. The selected building for the study was located in Metta Pracharak Hospital (Wat Rai Khing), Nakhon Pathom Province. It was 9-storey healthcare building with 300 hospital beds which constructed on a 6,528 square meters site. The participatory design process specifically involved the 4-group stakeholders (executives, medical staffs, patients and premises caretakers) during 2012 until 2021. It included the requirement acquisition and satisfactory assessment processes using interviewing and contexts analysis techniques.

The Results had showed the detailed design of the building comprised of plans, elevations and sections. This 38,520-square-meter building with 807,850,000-million-baht budget had been constructed during 2014 to 2017, 1,200 days construction period with 35 payment terms. In 2021, after three years of building usage. In addition to the results of the satisfaction assessment showed that they were many parameters with high satisfaction ratings which were the building approach those were easy to access and satisfied all the occupants, the locations of departments which satisfied both the executives and patients, the sizes of functional areas which were sufficient for medical staffs, and the maintenance of the building systems which were uncomplicated for the premises caretakers.

Through the analysis, the participatory design process of the study is systematic investigation of stakeholders’ requirements which included the main three steps those were 1) the survey, analysis and prediction of occupants’ requirements; 2) the study and analysis of the existing functional areas; and 3) the full participation of the occupants during the design development. There were still gaps for future improvement which were implementation of renewable energy generating systems, the adaptation of the building responding to emerging diseases, and the implementation of new technologies to improve the efficiency of building.
