Prevalence and associated factors of depression among the elderly living in Phon Phisai District, Nong Khai Province

Depression is a common condition in the elderly. The objectives of this study to study the prevalence and associated factors of depression among the elderly living in Phon Phisai District Nong Khai province. The design was cross-sectional analytic study. All of the elderly in hospitals, Buengkan province. The 1,264 samples were asked to answer by using a 2Q, 9Q and 8Q, the depression questionnaires from Mental Health Department, Ministry of Public Health. Analysis was frequency (percent), Mean and SD. The depression factors were analysis by logistic regression and multiple logistic regression analysis. The results showed that the point prevalence of depression was 12.3%, with 10.0% of male population and 13.9% of female population displaying this problem. Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that gender (p<0.05) income inadequacy (p<0.05) and self-perceived health status (p<0.01) were significantly associated with depression and adjusted odds ratio. Several associated factors were identified which should be presented to practicing physicians and health care workers in order to assist in the screening for depression among the elderly population.
