Proportion of Teachers in a School in Khon Kaen Province with Sufficient Knowledge Regarding Vocal Abuse

Abstract

Background and Objectives : Vocal abuse and misuse is the main cause of vocal cord injury. Teacher is the most common group of vocal abused and misused patients. So we conducted the study of the vocal abused and misused knowledge in teachers and proportion of vocal abuse in teachers.

Methods : This was a descriptive study in 171 teachers of a school in Khon Kaen province, Calculated sample size of 103 teacher using simple random sampling. Paper based questionnaires was applied for data collection. Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS (v.) 17.0 using proportion, median (IQR).The passing group have to get scores at least 60%. Inferential statistic using 95% confidence.

Result : The responding rate of the questionnaire was 87.4% (90from 103 samples). The proportion of the passing group was 0.40 with 95% CI 0.30-0.51. The knowledge about risk factors of vocal abuse and misuse is part of the test with the highest number of passing teachers. Age group between 21-30 years old, teachers with teaching experience less than
1 year and teachers in department of art and music are the groups that have the highest proportion of passing the test.  The result of the screening for vocal abuse and misuse by Screening Index for Voice Disorders (SIVD) found that there were 5 teachers (5.6%).

Conclusion : The proportion of the passing group is 40.0 %. The knowledge about risk factors is the highest score part. The proportion of high risk teachers screened by SIVD is 5.6%.
