Abstract

Abstract

According to a survey on computer users conducted by the National Statistical Office in 2022, it was found that 93.5% of individuals aged 15 years and above used computers for work purposes. Furthermore, many users exhibited sedentary behavior, spending more than six hours per day in front of a computer screen. This has been linked to increased work-related stress, with 10% of workers showing tendencies toward office syndrome. Common symptoms include shoulder stiffness, forward head posture, and sometimes eye socket pain. In Thai traditional medicine, these symptoms can be compared to Lom Plai Patthakat Syndrome Type 5. Thai traditional massage plays a significant role in treating office syndrome symptoms. The treatment methods vary depending on the accumulated local knowledge. Maha Sarakham Province has elevated its unique identity of Thai traditional massage by compiling lessons learned from certified folk healers recognized by the Ministry of Public Health into the Maha Sarakham Khid-Sen Massage Standard Manual for use in treating such conditions.

Objectives of the study: To examine the effectiveness of the Maha Sarakham Khid-Sen Massage Standard Manual by comparing pain levels before and after treatment. and to investigate patient satisfaction with the use of this innovation in treating Lom Plai Patthakat Syndrome Type 5 through Khid-Sen massage combined with herbal compress therapy.

Research Methodology : This study employed a quasi-experimental one-group pre-posttest design. The sample group consisted of 30 patients receiving continuous services three times within two weeks at the Thawarawadee Thai Traditional Medicine Clinic, Maha Sarakham Provincial Public Health Office. The study period was from July 2024 to May 2025. Accidental sampling was used.

The research instruments included : The Maha Sarakham Khid-Sen Massage Standard Manual, Treatment recording forms, Pain assessment scales (pre- and post-treatment), and Patient satisfaction evaluation forms. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) to examine basic information and satisfaction levels, and inferential statistics (Paired Samples T-test) to compare pain levels before and after treatment.

Results : The effectiveness of Khid-Sen massage combined with herbal compress in treating Lom Plai Patthakat Syndrome Type 5 at the Thawarawadee Thai Traditional Medicine Clinic, Maha Sarakham Provincial Public Health Office, based on the Maha Sarakham Khid-Sen Massage Standard Manual, showed the following: The majority of patients were female (24 cases, 80%). Most had experienced pain for more than six months (22 cases, 73.3%). More than half reported pain during work (16 cases, 53.3%). Pain level measurements showed : Before treatment: Mean = 6.17±0.31 (moderate to severe pain), S.D. = 0.83 After the 3rd treatment: Mean = 2.67±0.25 (mild pain), S.D. = 0.67 The reduction in pain level was statistically significant at 0.05 (p-value = 0.047). Patient satisfaction with the service was rated at a high level overall (Mean = 4.57, S.D. = 0.71).

Discussion and Recommendations: This study demonstrated the effectiveness of the treatment and may serve as a guideline for practice. However, practitioners should have prior experience in Khid-Sen massage or undergo proper training. Future studies should include different disease groups or service units, increase the sample size, and expand research to other levels of healthcare facilities.
