Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to evaluate clinical nursing practice guideline (CNPG) and nursing care innovations for dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in Mahasarakham Hospital. The innovation was composed of 9 products: (1) flow chart, (2) 4-coloredflag, (3) disease surveillance warning plate, (4) dengue brochure, (5) tourniquet test result sheet, (6) ORS force sheet, (7) scaled intravenous (IV) fluid paper, (8) intravenous fluid leveling paper roller, and (9) IV sheet. This set of nursing care innovation for DHF was applied for the management of 30 patients who were recruited through purposive sampling of laboratory confirmed cases of DHF admited to a pediatric ward of the hospital from May to August 2015. Ten physicians, 8 registered nurses and 30 caregivers, selected by purposive sampling, paticipated in the evaluation of the CNPG and innovation. Data were collected by using questionnaires, which comprised of a form for feasibility evaluation and a form for satisfaction evaluation. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics including percentage, mean and standard deviation. It was found that, with regard to CNPG feasibility, the physicians’ overall opinion was rated at high level (mean=4.26, SD 0.54); the registered nurses’ and the caregivers’ overall opinions were rated at highest level (mean=4.57, SD 0.60 and mean=4.81, SD 0.38, respectively). For satisfaction evaluation, the physicians’ overall satisfaction was rated in high level (mean=4.28, SD=0.52); and the registered nurses’ and the caregivers’ overall satisfaction were rated in highest level (mean=4.60, SD 0.58 and mean=4.86, SD 0.32 respectively). In conclusion, this nursing innovation and CNPG for DHF were found to be sufficient to reach treatment standards that were applied to ensure effective and efficient care for DHF patients during hospitalization.
