Twin Deliveries at Rayong Hospital
Abstract
A four – year retrospective study of twin deliveries at Rayong Hospital (from October 1987 to September 1991) revealed that there were 138 patients with twin delivery and 276 twin fetuses. The incidence was 7.7 per 1,000 deliveries. Most of the patients with twin delivery had the age between 20 – 29 years (88 patients, 63.76%). Most of the patients were not diagnosed as twin pregnancies before the labour pain begun (72 patients or 51.18%), and were delivered between 28 – 37 weeks of gestation (104 cases, 75.37%). Most of the twin fetuses had the birth weight between 1,000 – 2,499 grams (204 twin fetuses = 73.91%), were delivered normally (142 twin fetuses, 51.45%) and were male (149 twin fetuses, 53.99%). There were 144 patients with twin delivery (52.17%), who had both twin fetuses in vertex presentation . The complications of twin deliveries mostly were pre – term deliveries and low birth weight fetuses. The perinatal mortality rate was 54.34 : 1,000 births.
