Effect of Implementing Breast Feeding Promotion Guideline among Postpartum Mothers, Fang Hospital, Chiangmai Province

Abstract

Background:    The Ministry of Public Health has a policy that every hospital is a mother-child relationship hospital nationwide to promote breastfeeding according to the guidelines of the World Health Organization. The Maternity Nursing Group of Fang Hospital has established a maternal breastfeeding clinic to promote the maternal breastfeeding. Based on the statistics of success in breastfeeding in the first hour after birth of normal mothers at Fang Hospital, there is a tendency to decrease. Therefore, the Implementing Breast Feeding Promotion Guideline among Postpartum Mothers. It is expected that mothers will be breastfed successfully in the first hour after birth. The knowledge and attitude of the postpartum mother will be increased.

Objective:       To study the effect of Implementing Breast Feeding Promotion Guideline among Postpartum Mothers.

Study design:  This study is a quasi-experimental research. The samples were normal mothers and newborn babies without any complications in the delivery room. Divided into the group used the guideline 124 persons and the group not used the guideline 124 persons. The tools of this study are the LATCH Assessment and Knowledge Questionnaire and Breastfeeding Questionnaire. Analyzing general data by using frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Comparison of exact probability test and independent sample T-Test

Result:              The first stage of postpartum mothers who used the Implementing Breast Feeding Promotion Guideline among Postpartum Mothers is achieved in the first hour after birth. And they have more knowledge and attitude than the mothers who don’t use this guideline, with statistical significance at the level of 0.05 (P = 0.001, P <0.001, P <0.001 respectively)

Conclusion:     Implementing Breast Feeding Promotion Guideline among Postpartum Mothers has a positive effect on the success of breastfeeding for the first time. And mothers have better knowledge and attitudes. Therefore, the implementation of the guideline should be encouraged and used in the operation and followed up with continuous evaluation systematically.
