Abstract

Background:   Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death. Outcome after SCA is

dependent on critical interventions; particularly effective chest compressions, early defibrillation, and advanced life support. Training schoolchildren to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation is possible method of increasing bystander CPR rates. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommended that cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training for schoolchildren be mandatory.

Objective:     The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to test the effect of basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation training for the elementary school students.

Study design: The sample consisted of 40 Grade 5th and 6th students from the Nitiwit School in Nan Province. The students  were  assigned  into  experimental  and  control  groups  (20  each)  using  match  paired technique based on their age, academic level, and previous experiences with basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The controlled group received video based training program, while the experimental group received an intensive program for basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The intensive program was adapted from Gracy (2001). Descriptive statistics, paired t-test, and independent t-test were used for data analysis.

Results:        After completing the intensive program, the experimental group had significantly higher scores on basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation performance than before participating in the program (p<.05). The experimental group had significantly higher scores on basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation performance than the video base training group (p<.05).

Conclusions: The results suggested that the intensive program is more effective than video based training program in improving fifth and sixth graders’ performance in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This method of educational intervention may be applied when considering other similar health education interventions.
