Abstract

Backgrund:      Surgery is a treatment for the patient to heal or alleviate the symptoms of the disease. Operating room Phrae Hospital has guidelines for patient care to ensure safe surgery. From the data collection, it was found that the patient safety indicators had not met the set targets. The coaching techniques is a process in which knowledgeable or experienced persons guide and provide additional information step-by-step. In order to develop personnel to be aware of compliance with patient care guidelines to be safe from surgery.

Objective:        To study the effect of using professional nursing teaching techniques in compliance with patient care guidelines for surgical safety in Phrae Hospital.

Study design:  Using the quasi-experimental research model. The samples were professional nurses, operating room, Phrae Hospital. Thirty operating room nurses were recruited to each the experimental and control groups. The control group works normally and the experimental group participated the coaching techniques program based on the COACH model of Mishita Champasodsut. The research instrument is observation and examination of nursing records form. The consistency index of the instruments was 1. Cronbach’ Alpha Coefficient of reliability was .95. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test, and independent t-test.

Result:             1. The compliance with care guideline in the experimental group after participated the coaching techniques program were significantly more than before participated the program (p<.001). 2. The compliance with care guideline in the experimental group after participated the coaching techniques program were significantly more than those in the control group who works normally (p<.001).

Conclusion:     The using of procedures that knowledgeable or experienced persons provide, with additional step-by-step information, will significantly increase the nursing competency of operating room nurses.
