Effect of Resilience on Depression and Quality of Life in Persons with Chronic Renal Failure Who Receiving Hemodialysis

Abstract

Backgound:   Depression is a significant problem and reduces the quality of life among persons with chronic renal failure receiving hemodialysis. Enhancing resilience is one method that may reduce depression.

Objective:     The study was a quasi-experiment research that aimed to investigate the effect of resilience on depression and quality of life in persons with chronic renal failure receiving hemodialysis. Data collection was from April to May 2020.The sample included 30 persons with chronic renal failure who receiving hemodialysis. All of them were aged 18 years or older, mild depression, and received hemodialysis treatment at least six months. The instruments consisted of the demographic data form, Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) Thai version, the World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief Thai: WHOQOL-BREF-THAI version, and the resilience program. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon s signed rank test, and Mann-Whitney U test

Study design: The research results revealed that after receiving the resilience program, the experimental group had a significantly lower mean score of depression and higher the mean score of quality of life than before receiving program, at the level of .01.  Besides, after receiving the resilience program, the experimental group had a significantly lower mean score of depression and higher the mean score of quality of life than the control group, at the level of .01.

Results:         The results indicated that the resilience program could reduce depression and enhance the quality of life among persons with chronic renal failure receiving hemodialysis. Therefore, the program shall be implemented for promoting quality of life persons with chronic renal failure receiving hemodialysis.
