Effectiveness of spraying the endotracheal cuff with flurbiprofen for postoperative sore throat and hoarseness after general anesthesia: a randomized control trial
Abstract
Background: Postoperative sore throat (POST) is a common postoperative complication after general anesthesia. Flurbiprofen oral spray is one of topical NSAIDs that used to reduce sore throat from oral inflammation.
Objectives: To study the effectiveness of Flurbiprofen oral spray for postoperative sore throat after general anesthesia.
Study design: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled study was performed on 80 patients, scheduled for surgery under general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation. All patients were randomized into two groups. Group F (Flurbiprofen, n=40) patients received flurbiprofen spray on lubricated endotracheal tube cuff and Group C (Control, n=40) patients received only lubricating gel on endotracheal tube cuff. Incidence and severity of postoperative sore throat at 1,4 and 24 hours after surgery, hoarseness, adverse effects and patient satisfaction were recorded by a blinded anesthetic nurse after surgery.
Results: The incidence and severity of postoperative sore throat of Group F is significantly less than Group C at 1, 4 and 24 hours after surgery (p<0.001). Incidence and severity of hoarseness at 24 hour and side effect were not different in both groups.
Conclusions: Spraying the endotracheal cuff with Flurbiprofen helps to reduce the incidence and severity for postoperative sore throat without additional side effect.
