Abstract
Background: World Health organizations focus on patient safety It has established a patient safety program in 2004. Patient safety management is a crucial factor for diminishing errors on remedy and nursing care for patients in hospitals.
Objective: Patient safety is the ultimate goal of nursing and hospital management. This study aimed to analyze situations of patient safety management in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit of the Buddhachinaraj Phitsanulok Hospital.
Study design: The samples of this study are five administrators, eight nurses and three nurse aids. Data were collected by using document review, interview and focus group. The content analysis was used for analyzing data.
Results: The results of the study showed that patient safety in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit was managed by using the risk management framework of the Healthcare Accreditation Institute(1) However, there are also problems in patients safety managing, Reporting program has problems some nursing personnel not participating in the program to report, Some personnel did not follow the guidelines and had insufficient skills in those activities, Some personnel who did not comply with the guidelines, Some nursing personnel lacked awareness of the importance of incident reporting and felt no positive changes from reporting incidents, Some nursing personnel had insufficient skills in performing RCA. However, repeated incidents had occurred. This may be due to inappropriate safety management in the ward.
Conclusions: The results of this study, nursing administrators should develop a competency development system for nursing personnel to report on incidence encourage compliance with patient risk management guidelines and root cause analysis to understand the causes of more adverse event. In addition hospital administrators should make the incident reporting system less burden so nursing personnel can use them with minimal training.
