Compounding of Pediatric Extemporaneous Favipiravir Oral Suspensions in Community Hospital

Extemporaneous compounding preparation is one of pharmacists’ roles in all level of the hospital. The compounding is necessary for patients who are unable to administer any commercial dosage forms available on the market. It is individually prepared appropriate for specific patients, especially for pediatric patients who can not take tablets or capsules. To prepare the extemporaneous preparation, the pharmaceutical knowledge is required for formulation design, choosing suitable pharmaceutical techniques, packaging selection and monitoring of formulation stability. This article aimed to present the performance of extemporaneous favipiravir oral suspensions in community hospital for solve the problem of access to medicines for pediatric patients who were infected by coronavirus (COVID-19) in Thailand and were treated under a home isolation policy during early of year 2022. The performance, limitations and suggestions from the experiences of the author in management of compounding in community hospital setting were discussed. This information may be useful for pharmacists working in community hospitals to use as an example for designation of management of compounding under the conditions of local hospitals for providing appropriate pharmaceutical care to pediatric patients.
