Foodborne botulism is not a common disease. Between 14 and 18 March 2006, there has been an outbreak of this disease in a community of Changwat Nan resulting from consuming home canned bamboo shoots. Among 354 individuals who have eaten the bamboo shoots, 163 became sick mostly with abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, dry mouth, difficult in swallowing, diplopia dropping of upper eye lids, and limbs weakness. Some patients have had combinations of symptoms. Laboratory investigations revealed Clostridium botulinum type A as the causative organisms. Supportive care and antitoxin therapy have been performed. No death has been reported
From the literature searches, there were two such incidents in Thailand in 1997 and 1998 also from consuming the home-canned bamboo shoots. Clostridium botulinum type E were also found in samples of fresh sea foods, a catch from the Gulf of Thailand and collected from fresh markets in the year 1979.
