The prospective quasi-experimental research compared outcomes of active management versus expectant management of the third stage of labor of the total 2,263 cases of non-complicated pregnancy during May 2003 - April 2005. Of these, 1,137 cases underwent active management while 1,126 cases expectant management of the third stage of labor at Photharam hospital.
The result of this study demonstrated that early postpartum hemorrhae rate, blood transfusion rate and need for therapeutic oxytocin were reduced significantly in the active management (p<0.05). In addition, the average amount of blood loss and duration time of placental delivery were also reduced significantly (p<0.001). This study suggested that active management of the third stage of labor should be performed in all cases of labor.
