Abstract
The road safety campaign and behaviour survey reguarding the use of helmets and the consumption of alcohol among motorcyclists was conducted on Dec25, 1993, between 10.00-12.00 PM., at Tow Suranaree Monument. One hundred and twenty two motorcyclists were tested by breatherlizers and questionnaires. Most of them (88.5%) were drivers and male (95.9%), age between 15-29 years (means = 24.96). There were 46 of 122 (37.7%) who had a blood-alcohol level higher than 10 mg% and 22 (18%) persons had a higher than standard level (50 mg%). The significant factors associated with alcohol level were age, sex, status, type of driver, no driver license and history of alcohol addition. The average driving speed in the city was 50.1 Km/hr. and 80.2 km /hr. out of the city, and the teenage group was significantly higher than other groups (p <0.05). The behavior of the wearing helmets (always or occasionally) was 52.5%, and 33.6% of them never used helmets before. There were 27 of 122 (22.2%) who did not have a driver license and 66.4% had been driving while intoxicated (drunken). However, most of them agreed with law enforcement of wearing helmets and the limit of blood alcohol (lower than 50 mg%) when driving motorcycle. But the increased health promotion, health education and ramdom testing should be done regulary.
