Abstract

The study aimed to explore the factors associated with length of stay of acute ischemic stroke patients who admitted at a stroke unit. A retrospective analytic study was conducted. The medical records of 524 patients who were admitted to the stroke unit of Hua Hin Hospital were reviewed. The data were analyzed by using percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation, and regression analysis. The results showed the mean length of stay of acute ischemic stroke patients was 4.98±3.35 days. The factors including age, atrial fibrillation, receiving rtPA, pressure sore, pneumonia, urinary tract infection, NIHSS point, level of disability (mRS) were associated with prolonged length of stay (p<0.05). The multiple regression analysis showed the NIHSS points and level of disability (mRS) which could be used to predict the length of stay up to 34.1% (p<0.05). The results of NIHSS points and level of disability (mRS) could predicte the length of stay of ischemic stroke patients which would be useful for improving bed occupancy rate in the hospital and provide practical guideline to prevent medical complications among prolong hospitalize patients.
