Innovation of Education Media on Vaccination

Abstract

The Nam Ree Phatthana is a remote village bordering between Thailand and Lao PDR. This area does not have international checking point. The people in the area are an ethnic population called “Lau” and they use Lau language as primary language. Over 70% of people do not study and have limted knowledge about child vaccination. In 2014, the vaccination coverage was 40 percent; and data from a survey revealed 62% of people were lack of knowledge about vaccination. To solve the problem, an innovation for vaccination education was created in two languages: Thai and Lua. It was built as an education box containing information about immunization of chlidren. The objectives of this study were to assess the effectiveness of the vaccine education box in improving knowledge and attitude on immunization of mothers or parents of children aged 0 - 5 years, and to evaluate the satisfaction on the us of the innovation. It was conducted as a research and development study from March to June 2014. Data were collected by questionnaires and were analyzed by descriptive statistic (percent and mean). It was found that the level of knowledge and positive attitude of parents on child vaccination increased from 53% (fair level) at the beginning of the study to a medium level (78%) after 2 months; and further increased to 96% after 2 additional months. The innovation gained high level of satisfaction by the end (94%). To concluded, the innovation was found to be a effective vaccination education media. Further improvement of the product was recommended to include the use of spoken language for Lua in order to ensure correct interpretation by the target populations. In addition, the innovation should be more durable and adjusted to the size that is easy reading and clear.
