Abstract
This participatory action research aimed to study to a process of creating social cooperation for sustainable waste management in Hmong, Mian and Lua Tribes in Paklang subdistrict, Pua district, Nan Province. Participants were 92 individuals selected by purposive sampling. Data collection methods included a set of questionnaire, focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, observations and field notes. Data were analyzed by using frequency and percentage. Qualitative data was analyzed through content analysis. The process began with analysis of the problems, assessment of the potential of the community, building capacity of community leaders to take lead in obtaining cooperation from all tribal groups. It was found that the community developed good habit toward waste management resulting in continued community mobilization on waste disposal. Reduction of waste upto 47.93% was observed. The living environment of the community was improved; and all people (100.00%) were satisfied with the operation. The factors for success included support from the Sub-district Administrative Organizations, participation and
partnership of community networks, and the consistency of the activities with the sociol norm within the community. Recommendations for the sustainability included the expansion of the model to other areas and the increasing roles and leadership of government agencies in implementing waste management models.
