Professional Training of Public Health Students in School of Medicine, University of Phayao

The objective of this study was to explore the satisfaction and effects of professional training among 4th year public health students in the Community Health Division, School of Medicine, University of Phayao. It was conducted as a cross sectional survey over the study perion from March to April 2017. A total of 450 students were randomly selected to participate in the study. A set of questionnaire was used for data collection; and the data were analyzed by using percentage, mean and standard deviation. The results showed that most of the participants were female, 87.30%; and majority of them had GPA between 2.01 to 2.50 (45.40%). The suitable number of students at each training hospital was 4. Around 65.30% of the hospitals were original training sites; and accommodations were availbale in 74.20% of the sites. More than half of the hospitals were suitable for continueing internship training whereas 1.80% were considered unsuitable and shoul be discontinued. Generally, case collection assignment did not meet the requirement set in the curriculum. The highest case collection outcomes were observed in the outpatient department, family medicine clinic and emergency room department (ER), respectively. However, the ER department was the most favorite unit among the students due to the kindliness of the trainers and the easily understandable teaching methods. Overall training satisfaction was at moderate level. The most satisfying topic was “proper apprenticeship rule” (Mean=3.25, SD=0.557); and the least satisfying one was “suitability for pre-internship preparation” (Mean=2.67, SD=0.664). Thus, it is recommended that consultations, meetings and reviews on internship should be conducted among trainers from the training sites, supervisors, teachers and representative of students who have already finished the internship in order to obtain appropriate qualitative and and quantitative training model.
