Needs Assessment to Develop Community Based Integrated Health Care Model for Elderly Population in Tambon Sa-ad, Nam Phong District, Khon Kaen Province

Thailand is now entering ageing Society. The study was carried out focusing on needs assessment to develop community based integrated health care model for elderly population in Tambon Sa-ad, Nam Phong District, Khon Kaen Province. This project is the cooperation between Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and JICA International, Government of Japan. The study was conducted during 2008-2011 through a survey research. A set of questionnaire was developed and every senior citizen (N=986) was interviewed to assess the current situation and identify needs. Most of the elderly were farmers, aged ranging 60-69 years and self dependent. Their average income was below 500 baht/month and the main source of income was from the government’s monthly stipend. The common health problems were : dementia, bone and joint disorders, blurred vision and oral health. Health problems which need urgent attention were: blurred vision, sharp and radiating pain down to the leg, dental problems. All the findings were assessed and analyzed which would eventually lead to the development of the proper care model for the elderly.
