Abstract

The prevalence of HIV infection was studied among patients who attended Wichienburi Community Hospital during 1 April 1992 to 31 March 1993. The outcome revealed that 58 out of 3,655 cases (1.59%) were found to be anti-HIV positive. The prevalence rate of HIV infection in pregnant women was 1.03%. Most of the HIV positive cases were between 20-29 years old (72.41%) and low education (primary School 79.31%). The main risk factor was sexual promiscuity (87.93%). Results from this survey indicated HIV transmission in rural population. Interventions aimed to reduce HIV transmission in this group must be emphasized.
