The objective of this case-control study was to determine the incidence and study the outcome of teenage pregnancy at Sukhothai Hospital. Medical records of singleton parturients at Sukhothai Hospital in the fiscal year 2009 were retrospectively analyzed. The study group consisted of 395 women aged less than 20 years. The control group consisted of 1,662 women aged 20 years and more. The incidence of teenage pregnancy was 19.2 percent. Most received adequate antenatal care.

Compared with the control group, the study group had higher rate of preterm delivery and low birthweight and lower rate of gestational diabetes mellitus and cesarean section in primigravida. Nodifference of other obstetric and neonatal outcomes was found. In the group of women aged less than 15 years, most received inadequate antenatal care and the rates of birth asphyxia and perinatal death were significantly higher. The incidence of teenage pregnancy at Sukhothai Hospital was 19.2 percent. The significant complications were preterm delivery and low birth weight. The promotion of accessibility and improvement of quality of the antenatal care should be an important strategy for preventing pregnancy complication.
