The Preliminary Effectiveness of Behavior Modification Program on Metabolic Syndrome Risk Group, Pa Sang District, Lamphun Province
บทคัดย่อ
This study was a quasi-experimental one group pre-post test research and aimed at evaluating the preliminary effectiveness of behavior modification program on metabolic syndrome high risk group, determining the Cognitive behavior modification (CBM) and group dynamics concepts into curricula. Twenty - four metabolic syndrome subjects were selected by simple random sampling in Pa Sang district, Lamphun Province. The study was carried out from January to March 2012 with the 12-week intervention. Instruments consisted of 1) knowledge and attitude of diet and exercise questionnaire, 2) satisfaction questionnaire, and 3) health status form; weight, height, waist circumference and body mass index. The intervention was the behavior modification program. Content validity were assessed by face validity among 3 experts. The reliability of knowledge using KR-20 was 0.75. Moreover, the reliability levels of attitude using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.83. Data analyses were performed using descriptive statistics (frequency, mean, standard deviation, and percentage) as well as inferential statistics (paired-t test) with the significant level of 0.05. The result after the intervention demonstrated that the knowledge levels increased from 10.50 to 12.96 (95% CI = 1.63-3.28), attitude levels from 3.66 to 4.04 (95% CI = 0.22, 0.40) at a statistically significant level of 0.01. In addition, out of the 24 subjects, six reduced the body weight down below the gold standard level (25%), with mean score equal to 2.63 kg (95% CI 2.03, 3.22), seven subjects (29.2%) decreased the waist circumference down below the gold standard level, with mean score equal to 3.92 cm (95% CI 3.13, 4.70), the body mass indices of the six subjects were lower than the gold standard level (25%), with mean score equal to 1.08 kg/m2 (95% CI 4.25, 1.34). The average of the satisfaction score was at a high level (4.25, 0.61)
Considering the result of this study, the application of behavior modification program on metabolic syndrome risk group is recommended. Health care providers should apply this program to reduce body weight, waist circumference and body mass index in metabolic syndrome risk group. However, this program may be not appropriate approach to prevention the risk of non-communicable disease.
