Community pharmacists in Thailand have increasingly expanded their roles and services over the past decades, but still received modest support from the Government. A review of community pharmacy services in a successful country is important and can be used as a guidance for developing and expanding community pharmacy services in Thailand. Community pharmacy services in
England can be classified into 4 major groups: 1) medication management services, 2) supply-type services, 3) public health services and 4) other services. It appeared that community pharmacy public health services get very well support from the Westminster. The following are key findings learnt from England which can be adapted to support the development of community pharmacy services in Thailand. In that connection, a dedicated committee or organization should be established and should be responsible for negotiating with the Government to get their support for the services proposed and for promoting the services to the public. In addition, a specific fund for pharmacy services should be split off from other resource funds. Moreover, services with positive evidences should be accredited as a template so that the Contracting Unit for Primary Care (CUP) are able to consider funding such services in response to the local need. In conclusion, public health roles and services should be developed in addition to professional services in order to promote health and prevent diseases.
Key words: community pharmacy service, community pharmacy, community pharmacist, drugstore, health service system
