บทคัดย่อ

This study was aimed at estimating the cost of productivity loss due to premature death related to alcohol drinking in Thailand using the human capital approach. The cost of premature death are the products of the total number of death attributable to alcohol drinking classified by age and gender and the present value of future earning for particular age and gender with the discount rate of 3 per cent. The future earning classified by age and gender was derived from the Socio-Economic Survey (SES) in 2006 of National Statistic Office, while the age and gender adjusted life expectancy was obtained from the Burden of Disease Project. In 2006, there were 39,459 deaths attributable to alcohol drinking in Thailand. Of these amounts, 33,493 were males, while 5,966 were females. The total number of years of life loss related to alcohol drinking was 1,390,899 (1,164,552 years for males and 226,348 years for females). The total costs of productivity loss due to premature death were 104,128 million baht (95,804 million baht for males and 8,324 million baht for females). The top five leading causes of productivity loss due to premature death among males were HIV/AIDS (36,277 million baht), traffic accidents (26,989 million baht), cirrhosis (13,044 million baht), liver cancer (11,836 million baht), and alcohol dependence (2,294 million baht), respectively. In contrast, the leading causes of productivity loss due to premature death among females were AIDS (3,580 million baht), traffic accidents (2,796 million baht), liver cancer (706 million baht), cirrhosis (616 million baht), and breast cancer (175 million baht), respectively. The findings from this study can be helpful in guiding alcohol related policies and in assessing the efficiency of the interventions or policies aiming at mitigating the negative impacts of alcohol drinking in Thailand.
