Effects of Education and Facility Provision on Needlestick or Sharp Injury Preventions among Nurses in an Emergency Room - ผลการให้ความรู้พยาบาลและการสนับสนุนอุปกรณ์ป้องกัน การบาดเจ็บจากเข็มหรือของมีคมในแผนกอุบัติเหตุฉุกเฉิน

บทคัดย่อ

      Needlestick or sharp injury is one cause of hospital-acquired infection among nursing personnel. The purpose of this evaluation was to examine the effect of education and facility provision on needlestick or sharp injury preventions among nursing personnel in an emergency room of Ban Mi hospital, Lop Buri province from September to December, 2007. The populations were 15 nurses and the sample were recruited with inclusion criteria. The total number of sample were 14 nurses - 12 registered nurses and 2 technical nurses. The research instruments were developed by the researcher and included a demographic data recording form, a lesson plan, a handbook, an observational recording form, and a needlestick or sharp injury recording form. The intervention consisted of the adult learning education and facility provision of protective equipment. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi square test.

      Results revealed that after implementing the education and facility provision, the proportion of correct practice of needlestick or sharp injury preventions among nursing personnel had significantly increased from 46.8 percent to 98.0 percent. In addition, the risk reduction of needlestick or sharp injury among nursing personnel was 75.0 percent. This study indicates that adult education and facility provision of protective equipment were effective in improving needlestick or sharp injury awareness and compliance among nursing personnel and reduced needlestick or sharp injuries.
