Maternal Participation in Intrapartum Care in Chachoengsao Hospital - การมีส่วนร่วมของผู้คลอด ณ โรงพยาบาลเมืองฉะเชิงเทรา

Participation in intrapartum care is important in nursing care, because it provides patient centered care to complete patientีs needs, but there are still problems and obstacles which influence the participation in intrapartum care. The purpose of this descriptive study was to describe the attribution of the participation in intrapartum care of gravida, and to describe the problems and obstacles which influenced the maternal participation in intrapartum care. Data were collected by interview and non-participatory observation. The samples were 104 cases of postpartum mothers during the first 24 hour after giving birth during January - March 2008. The instruments were the demographic form, the Interview of Participation in Intrapartum Care of Intrapartum form, and the Observation of Participation in Intrapartum Care of Intrapartum form. Data were analyzed and presented in terms of frequency, percent, mean, and standard deviation.
The results of the study revealed that the subjects had participation in intrapartum care at a moderate level in general. The attributes which showed the highest level of participation in intrapartum care were the existence of a relationship, surrendering the degree of power or control by carer, and positive benefit associated with intellectual and / or physical activity. The attributes which showed a moderate level of participation in intrapartum care were narrowing the gap of knowledge, information and / or competence, and an engagement in selective intellectual and / or physical activity. The problems and obstacles to participation in intrapartum care were pain, fatigue, afraid of offending and lack of courage, shyness, fear, lack of knowledge and experience, lack of the support of caregivers and / or close peer, lack of caring experience of caregivers, and unexpected outcomes during labour. The findings could be used as a background information for the development of the guideline to improve the participation in intrapartum care.
