Effects of Knowledge and Skill Promotion Program for Caregivers of Stroke Patients, Phrae Hospital

Abstract

Background:     Stroke is a disease with acute neurological symptoms. This is caused by the rupture or blockage of blood vessels within the brain, resulting in the death of the patient or have a disability leftover. Caregiver for stroke patients, therefore, being a person with an important role to help patients. From earlier researches, it was found that enhancing the knowledge and skills of caregivers of stroke patients that resulting in caregivers was developing knowledge and skills can be used in the care of patients with cerebral vascular disease and can be used to care for patients continuously.

Objective:         In order to compare the knowledge and skills promotion program for caregivers of stroke patients before and after receiving the program and compare knowledge and skills between the experimental groups receiving the program with the control group that received regular care.

Study design:    This research was a quasi-experimental research design in two groups were evaluated before and after by studying the effectiveness of caregivers’ knowledge and skills program for caring for stroke patients, Phrae Hospital and to study the knowledge and skills of careers in the medical ward, Phrae Hospital before and after receiving the program between November 2019 and February 2020. Statistics for data analysis were    X-Bar, standard deviation and t-test

Results:            Knowledge and skills of caregivers of patients with stroke in the experimental group after receiving the program were higher than before receiving the program. With X-Bar 37.65 (SD=2.83) of knowledge and skills before receiving the program and after receiving the program, there are X-Bar 54.35 (SD=2.15) (p<.001) of knowledge and skills. The knowledge and skills of the experimental group who received the program were higher than the control group that received routine care. By the control group that received regular care have knowledge and skills are X-Bar 47.75 (SD=3.75) (p<.001)

Conclusions:     Program to enhance the knowledge and skills of caregivers in caring for stroke patients, Phrae Hospital. Helping caregivers for stroke patients have more knowledge and skills in care should, therefore, be used with caregivers of stroke patients. In order to increase the efficiency in providing care, which will lead to quality improvement to continue providing services of Phare Hospital.
