Efficacy of Intratympanic Dexamethasone Injection for Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Background: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) present with abrupt onset of hearing loss, of more than 30 dB at 3 consecutive frequencies. Systemic steroid therapy is gold standard of treatment.
Method: Pre-experimental study, data were collected retrospectively. 51 of SSNHL performed intratympanic dexamethasone (ITD) injection, between January 1,2012 to December 31,2016. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistic (%, SD, Mean, X ) and inferential statistic (Chi-square test, Paired t-test)
Results: 17 of 51 (33.3%) were improve hearing. Significant improvement of pure tone average after ITD injection (p=0.011). No tympanic membrane perforation or otitis media of all pateints
Conclusion: ITD injection is safe and effective for treatment of SSNHL.
